Beautiful Age of Conservatories

Last Sunday, Volunteer Park celebrated its 100th birthday with Victorian Days. The conservatory there was decked out with bunting and brilliant with flowers. It was a perfect Seattle summer day watching friends of the park picnicking, playing croquet and modeling Victorian finery. The word perambulate seems appropriate.

Here's my sketch of the conservatory. " Made up of 3,426 glass panes fit into a wood and iron framework, this Victorian-style greenhouse structure is modeled on London's Crystal Palace. Inside, the Volunteer Park Conservatory is divided into five display houses: bromeliads, ferns, palms, seasonal, and cacti and succulents. "  Wikipedia

And just for fun, here's an early spring sketch of a conservatory in the Botanical Gardens in Buenos Aires. This is not the largest Art Nouveau Greenhouse. I somehow missed that one. October, 2010.

  1. Really good bunting, and I like how the doorway stands out. So glad to see the BA one too! You sent me scurrying to Google images to see the other one (and added to my itinerary), so thanks for that!

  2. Oh good! I read that there are 5 greenhouses there. I only saw this one - and many, many cats.
